Piedmont (Piemonte in Italian) is one of the most important regions in North-Italy that counts about 4 millions of inhabitants. Turin (Torino in Italian) is the regional capital and other important cities are Alessandria, Asti, Biella, Cuneo, Novara and Vercelli.
Turin is one of the most industrialized cities of Italy, in its land there are renowned companies as Fiat and Caffarel (the company that invented the chocolate named Gianduiotto).
There are many sights to be visited in this city like the Mole Antonelliana, the Lingotto, Palazzo Reale and if you love museum you cannot miss to visit one of the most museum of the city: the Egyptian Museum, it is rich in historical works. You should also have to visit the Duomo of Turin in which it is preserved the Holy Shroud of Turin i.e. the linen sheet where it is possible to see the signs of Jesus crucifixion. Nearby Turin you can admire the huge tops of Val di Susa, a resort where you could spend mountain holidays.
Novara is a city where it is possible to see many picturesque small villages and castles of other times; and you could also visit the square that is dedicated to Giuseppe Garibaldi or admire the bell-tower of San Gaudenzio.
Cuneo is a place plunged in the Piedmont countryside, where you could admire marvellous landscapes and see buildings of great historical value like the Racconigi Castle.
Verbania is the perfect place for those people who want to spend their holiday by the lake; this resort and all area of province faces on the sides of Lake Maggiore, here there are many amusements and tourist amenities for those ho will visit this place.
Alessandria is a city full of sights to be visited; some famous places are the Square of Libertà (a square desired by Napoleon Bonaparte), the Church of Santa Maria di Castello, the Arc of Trionfo and the Museum Civico, where it is possible to admire historical finds of great importance.
Asti is one of the most important cities of Piedmont; it offers many artistic works and buildings to be visited. Some of them are the Cathedral of Santa Maria of Assunta, the Torre Rossa (literally Red Tower) and the monument dedicated to Vittorio Emanuele II. In the city you could go and visit one of its many museums like the Jewish Museum or the Alfieriano Museum.
The city of Biella is especially known for the Marian Sanctuary of Oropa, where each year come millions of pilgrims.
Piedmont is the ideal region for families and young people. Families could stay in one of many comfortable hotel facilities of the region; young people could have fun by going to famous resorts of Sestriere and Bardonecchia or to make some trips by visiting the National Park of Gran Paradiso where it is possible to admire the local fauna and flora. Other sights are: the Sacro Monte of Crea, the Basilica of Superga and Borromee Island.
By visiting Piedmont you could have the opportunity to taste the its delicious cuisine; you could taste dishes like the bagna cauda, the soups, the tortelli (kind of ravioli) and the with truffle of Alba; and you could drink tasty wines like the Barolo.
This region was conquered by many people such as Romans, Hungarians and Hapsburgs, but it was also part of the Kingdom of Savoia.
Piedmont throughout the time was able to modernise and now there are many companies that support its economy; to remember that this land is also based on agriculture with products like corns and beets, and very productive is the farming of pigs and cattle-raising.
